The supply of feeders was light with several barns cancelling auctions. Reporters noted much of this week's calf offering was less attractive to buyers than normal and consisting of small lots of unweaned calves, often without full or any health programs, and carrying extra flesh or hair which is not a good mixture this time of year. Extreme heat made transporting or receiving cattle stressful and dangerous. Demand was light to moderate again, mostly heat related. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday and should be viewed as mostly neutral and likely overshadowed by news released late Friday evening of the phased in reopening of the US/Mexico border which is planned to occur in late Aug. On feed numbers were reported at 102.2 percent, Marketings at 97.3 percent and Placements at 97.0 percent of a year ago. The placement number was slightly less than the average pre-report estimates, but still within the wide range of estimates, other numbers were basically spot on. In addition to the cattle on feed report the bi-annual cattle inventory report was also published. The number for all cattle was just slightly above year ago levels. Beef cows that have calved was down 1 percent, beef heifers over 500 lbs. intended for replacements was up 3 percent, but by head count that number doesn't off set the drop in beef cows. Some growth was seen on the dairy side as the beef on dairy calf sector has been very profitable. A few stick-out sales were limited this week with the light offering and not a lot of drafts over 20 head. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold 55 head of 657 lb. steers for 413.50.00. Mid-MO Stockyards sold 71 head of 715 lb. steers for 378.75. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 34 head of 804 lb. steers for 354.00 and 480 head of 908 lb. steers for 341.50. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 27 head of 515 lb. heifers for 453.00. Boxed beef cut-out values were lower for the week as of Friday's close. Choice closed at 361.24, down 5.57 and Select closed at 346.71, down 8.58 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is 14.53 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday was reported just under 37K head, it is likely more sales occurred after the report cutoff. Prices were sharply lower this week with live sales generally 8.00 lower and dressed sales 12.00 lower. Live sales reported mostly at 230.00 and dressed sales mostly 365.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 1250 head with a weighted average weight of 538.95 lbs. and a price value of 436.26, 18.96 lower than last week. The steer/heifer is 46.69 per cwt.
